Azteca Mexican Grill
Family-owned Jalisco-rooted cooking that's been the best Mexican in Oswego County since 2007
The Place
Azteca Mexican Grill opened in 2007, when two sisters from Jalisco, Mexico set up on East Bridge Street in Oswego. Nearly two decades later, the family-owned restaurant is still going strong — a Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite every year from 2018 through 2023, with a 4.5/5 Google rating across more than 330 reviews. There’s a second location in Camillus for those closer to Syracuse.
The room is casual and family-friendly, with colorful decor that does its job of transporting you south of the border. It’s a neighborhood spot with the feel of somewhere that earned its regulars rather than imported them.
The Food
The menu covers all the staples — sizzling fajitas that arrive at the table still crackling on a hot plate, loaded burritos, crispy chimichangas, and street tacos with a devoted following. But the dish locals push on first-timers is the Quesabirria: tender, flavorful beef in a crispy cheese-wrapped tortilla, served with rich consomme for dipping. Many regulars say it’s one of the best things they’ve ever eaten.
Appetizers hold up their end. The queso fundido with chorizo is addictively cheesy. The fresh shrimp cocktail is a crowd-pleaser. The house tortilla chips with pico de gallo have drawn comparisons from traveling reviewers to Mexican restaurants across the country. Hot sauces are available at every table for those who need more heat.
Vegetarian options are solid — mushroom fajitas and vegetarian burritos both get good notices. Dessert ends with homemade tres leches cake.
