Happy Friday, 315!
Happy Friday, 315! Spring officially arrives this weekend, and the calendar is loaded to match. The headliner this week is The Book of Mormon at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, running Friday through Sunday. It's one of the funniest musicals ever to hit Broadway, and seeing it at the Landmark is a treat. Across the region, live music is everywhere: Crystal Ship brings their Doors tribute to Middle Ages Brewing on Saturday, The Mere Mortals play Friday night at the same spot, and over in the Mohawk Valley, the Irish Cultural Center welcomes back Rory Makem, a seasoned performer with over 37 years on the road, for an evening of Irish folk music on Friday.
The Finger Lakes has one of the tastiest weekends of the year. The 11th Annual Bacon on the Lakein runs Saturday and Sunday along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, with wineries pairing their wines with sizzling bacon-inspired bites. Tickets tend to sell out, so don't wait. In Waterloo, the St. Patty's Train keeps the Irish celebration rolling on Friday night with dance, disco, and nonstop party hits. And Jess Novak plays a Sunday set at Bluewater Grill in Skaneateles.
For something completely different, Monster Truck Wars roars into the Toyota Coliseum in Syracuse this weekend with shows Saturday and Sunday. Runners can lace up for the 13th Annual Syracuse Half Marathon on Sunday morning, starting and finishing at the Oncenter. And if you're looking for a quieter weekend activity, Sterling Nature Center is hosting a Signs of Spring Equinox Walk on Friday morning, and Fulton's Friends of the Library presents Birding in Fulton with local photographer Tim Carroll on Saturday.
The Mohawk Valley brings its usual mix. The Utica Comets host Racing Night at the Adirondack Bank Center on Friday, and the Cabin Fever Limited makes another run from Utica to Remsen on Saturday. In Rome, Copper City Brewing hosts Pints & Plot Twists, a Blind Date with a Book event on Saturday afternoon. Over at the Munson Museum of Art on Sunday, the Food & Art Unite multicultural food tasting returns for its third year with tasting stations from area restaurants, live music, and performances celebrating Utica's global community. And on Wednesday, the Munson hosts an Art Conversation exploring how works from The Met connect with pieces in their own collection.
The North Country wraps up ice show season with Norfolk-Norwood's "Once Upon a Time in Ice" at the Zappia Arena on Saturday and Potsdam's "Royalty on Ice" at Cheel Arena on Sunday. The Ogdensburg History Museum kicks off its Voices Unheard series on Sunday, a three-week discussion exploring the forgotten groups of the American Revolution, led by City Historian Julie Madlin. And down in Oswego County, Colloca Estate Winery throws a Wine Whiskey Western Night on Saturday, there's a 70s Disco Murder Mystery Dinner in Fulton, and the Sip N' Learn series returns to 114 Reserve on Monday with a TED Talk-style evening. This week's Foodie Corner heads to Pulaski for Tater Town, where an entire restaurant is built around the loaded baked potato. More on that below.

Tater Town - Pulaski
Here's a restaurant that takes one idea and commits to it completely. Tater Town in Pulaski is built around a single concept: stuff delicious things inside the biggest baked potato you've ever seen. It sounds simple, and that's exactly the point. The potatoes are enormous, the toppings are generous, and the menu reads like a greatest hits of comfort food, all piled onto a split-open spud.
The lineup of loaded taters covers serious ground. You can get a Reuben potato with corned beef, sauerkraut, and all the fixings. There's a Hot Turkey Dinner tater that reviewers say tastes just like Thanksgiving. The Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese tater, the BBQ Chicken, the Cajun Shrimp, and the Chicken Bacon Ranch are all on the menu. They also do a Teriyaki tater with ground turkey, ginger, water chestnuts, and teriyaki sauce on a sweet potato for something with a global twist. If the signature taters don't cover what you're craving, you can build your own. Beyond potatoes, the menu includes breakfast options (they open at 7am), loaded fries and chips with toppings like Maryland Crab and Buffalo Chicken, poutine with brown gravy and cheese curds, homemade chips with Campfire sauce, and even a petit filet served with a half tater. For dessert, they make coconut cream and peanut butter pie. And in the summer months, an ice cream window opens up.
The staff wear potato-punned shirts ("Spud Muffin," "Taters Gonna Tate") and the owners make the rounds to every table. Reviewers consistently call out the friendly service, the huge portions, and the fair prices. One food blogger summed it up by saying he had a hard time starting his review with anything other than pure disbelief that a restaurant built entirely around baked potatoes could be this good. They even have a dedicated oven just for baking the potatoes. It's the kind of place where the premise makes you laugh and the food makes you come back.
